ALL EXTERIOR WOOD NEEDS PROTECTION FROM OUTDOOR WEATHER.

The damaging effects of sun, precipitation and temperature extremes on exposed unprotected wood begin immediately and last forever. Morning dew, rainwater and melting ice or snow are quickly absorbed by unprotected wood, causing it to soften and swell. Direct exposure to the sun’s heat causes drying, which makes wood shrink. Continuous cycles of wet and dry, swelling and shrinking, cause wood to warp, split, crack and chip, all of which lead to premature wood degradation and expensive repairs. Unprotected wood is also subject to surface graying caused by constant exposure to the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Persistent moisture exposure creates ripe conditions for the growth of mildew, mold, algae and other fungal organisms that feed on wood, eventually spreading across and discoloring the surface. Termites and other wood boring insects also use wood for a food source, causing ultimate wood rot and decay.

We recommended to clean and seal your deck at least every 2 years. Why spend thousands to repair or replace it when you can spend hundreds to protect it? This image illustrates some of the most common problems your deck will encounter if not properly treated.

Our process involves two steps.

Step 1 – Clean and Restore

What is involved exactly? We restore your decks wood by either cleaning or stripping the surface. If your wood is not coated with a stain, it will be pre-treated with a specialty cleaner and the washed thoroughly. This will loosen up the grime and allow us to remove the aged top surface layer of the wood. After we carefully & thoroughly wash the deck, we will remove the grayed appearance as well as ground-in dirt and stains from food, fungus growth, mildew, mold and algae. If your wood has been previously coated with a varnish or solid color stain, stripping may be required, followed by a light sanding of the flat surfaces. Warning: It is very easy for an inexperienced person and or company to cause irreparable damage to your deck within minutes if the proper pressure and nozzles are not being used to clean your deck. Trust the professionals at Grime Busters Power Washing to get the job done correctly without causing damage to the wood.

Why is it necessary ? Unfinished wood that is weathered gray or covered with embedded dirt and fungus growth will prevent a new coating from adhering or penetrating properly. If the surface is not washed thoroughly, it will likely lead to any new finish fading prematurely, cracking and peeling, or reduced water repellency and performance. Once we clean your deck, the wood will be restored to its natural, like-new appearance, and will be ready to accept a protective coating.  With 17 years of experience restoring decks, we can assist you on deciding which finish is best for your deck.

Step 2 – Protect and Beautify

What is involved exactly ? After cleaning your deck, we apply either a clear sealer, a transparent stain, or a solid color stain. These coatings will prevent water and moisture absorption to the wood, so the structural damage like cracking and warping are minimized.

Why is it necessary ? Unprotected wood that is exposed to outdoor weather will eventually warp, split, rot and decay from water absorption, and gray from UV exposure. To stop this degradation, application of a protective coating fortified with water repellent and UV resistance is critical. Once your wood is coated with either a clear sealant or a colored stain, it will better withstand these elements, look beautiful again, and give you many seasons of outdoor living pleasure.
