All exterior wood needs protection from outdoor weather.

Why? Because the damaging effects of outdoor weather on exposed, unprotected wood begins immediately and lasts forever. Many homeowners spend countless hours and money building beautiful decks, fences and sided structures, then sadly watch them deteriorate because their wood is not protected from the devastating forces of weather. The damaging effects of sun, precipitation and temperature extremes on unprotected wood begin immediately. Morning dew, rainwater and melting ice or snow are quickly absorbed by unprotected wood, causing it to soften and swell. Direct exposure to the sun’s heat causes drying, which makes wood shrink. Continuous cycles of wet and dry, swelling and shrinking, cause wood to warp, split, crack and chip, all of which lead to premature wood degradation and expensive repairs.

Unprotected wood is also subject to surface graying caused by constant exposure to the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Persistent moisture exposure creates ripe conditions for the growth of mildew, mold, algae and other fungal organisms that feed on wood, eventually spreading across and discoloring the surface. Termites and other wood boring insects also use wood for a food source, causing ultimate wood rot and decay.

This image illustrates some of the most common problems your deck will encounter if not properly treated. We recommended to clean and seal your deck at least every 2 years.
Why spend thousands to repair or replace it when you can spend hundreds to protect it?

Our process involves two steps.

Step 1 – Clean and Restore

What is involved exactly? we restore your decks wood by either cleaning or stripping the surface. If your wood is uncoated, it needs to be cleaned thoroughly with a product specifically formulated to gently remove the aged top surface layer, which will rid the surface of its grayed appearance, ground-in dirt and stains from food, fungus growth, mildew, mold and algae. If your wood has been previously coated with a varnish or solid colored stain, stripping will be required, followed by a light sanding of the flat surfaces.

Why is it necessary ? Uncoated wood that is weathered gray or covered with embedded dirt and fungus growth will prevent a coating from adhering or penetrating properly which can lead to premature color fading, cracking and peeling, or reduced water repellency performance. Once cleaned, however, your wood surface will be restored to its natural, like-new appearance, and will be ready to accept a protective coating.

Step 2 – Protect and Beautify

What is involved exactly ? After cleaning, we apply a colored transparent stain & sealer or clear water repellent sealant. These coatings prevent water and moisture absorption, so the structural damage like cracking and warping are minimized.

Why is it necessary ? Unprotected wood that is exposed to outdoor weather will eventually warp, split, rot and decay from water absorption, and gray from UV exposure. To stop this degradation, application of a protective coating fortified with water repellant and UV resistance is critical. Once your wood is coated with either a clear sealant or a colored stain, it will better withstand these elements, look beautiful again, and give you many seasons of outdoor living pleasure.

The map above shows the areas of increased algae growth in the United States. As you can see Maryland falls in the “serious problem” zone. Gloeocapsa magma is the primary algae found growing on your home, deck, and / or building. Winter months with reduced sun and southern exposure provide a comfortable growth environment for spores to colonize.
Fortunately, The Grime Busters have been safely removing this type of algae from homes, decks, and buildings for years. Let us show you how we can restore your home, deck, or building’s exterior surface to like new condition.
